Around twelve percent of mortgages in my congressional district (Georgia-13) are considered over 90 days delinquent. The foreclosure rate in my district currently stands at around four percent, which is higher than the national rate. Every county in my district is listed in the top ten foreclosure areas in Georgia. These statistics are particularly troubling since they simply are not improving, despite my efforts and the efforts of my staff who are working with those in danger of losing their homes

Westmoreland Votes to End Unnecessary Housing Program, Return $1 Billion to US Taxpayers

Washington, DC - March 11, 2011 - (RealEstateRama) -- Today, Congressman Westmoreland joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues in the House to terminate the Federal Housing Authority Refinance Program Termination Act. In March 2010, without an act of Congress, the Obama administration announced the creation of the FHA Refinance Program to refinance underwater loans into the FHA using $8 billion in TARP funds. As of February 3, 2011 – almost one year into the program – only $50 million had been disbursed and only 44 loans have been refinanced.

Congressman Westmoreland joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues to support this legislation. The bill terminates the Housing and Urban Development’s Emergency Homeowner Relief Program. The program was initially created in 1975, however not funded until last July with the passage of the Dodd-Frank Act.
