Rep. Tom Graves Votes to Expand Access to Mortgages, Home Ownership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 16, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) voted today for the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act (H.R. 650) and the Mortgage Choice Act (H.R. 685), legislation that will make it easier for low- and middle- income families to qualify for a mortgage and purchase a home.

“The dream of home ownership is rightfully engrained in American life,” said Rep. Graves. “After all, a home is not only an asset, it’s a place to rest and relax, raise a family, and somewhere you can call your own. These bills will preserve home ownership options and reduce unnecessary barriers put in place by Washington liberals that make it harder for some families to qualify for a mortgage.”

H.R. 650 changes the definition of “high-cost mortgage” to ensure that consumers have access to affordable manufactured housing. This change is necessary because of modifications made to the Truth in Lending Act by Dodd-Frank. H.R. 650 passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 263 to 162.

H.R. 685 will clarify the definition of “points and fees” in the Truth in Lending Act, allowing more loans to be classified as Qualified Mortgages, which would increase borrower options. It passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 286 to 140
