WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities program was named the winner of the Community Strong award at the Metro Atlanta Chamber’s 2015 E3 Awards presentation on Thursday. The E3 awards celebrate metro Atlanta companies, individuals, governments and nonprofits that “are committed to positioning metro Atlanta as a place where the economy and environment connect for everyone.”

“Our Green Communities program has been highly effective in encouraging local governments to reduce their environmental footprint and become more sustainable,” said ARC Executive Director Douglas Hooker. “It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Metro Atlanta Chamber for our work.”

Green Communities is a voluntary certification program for jurisdictions in the 10-county Atlanta region that recognizes local governments that implement policies and practices that contribute to overall sustainability.

Since the program began in 2009, 18 jurisdictions in the 10-county region have been certified. Cities and counties earn Green Communities certification by implementing practices and policies in 10 categories, ranging from energy efficiency and green building to recycling and water efficiency. ARC’s Green Communities program was the first program in the country seeking to transform a region by promoting sustainability through a green certification program for local governments.

More information about ARC’s Green Communities Certification Program, including the measures each certified community has implemented, is available on the agency’s website at www.atlantaregional.com/greencommunities.
