Rep. Scott Votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits, Homebuyers’ Tax Credit
Washington, DC – November 9, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman David Scott voted to stimulate the local economy and provide stability to Georgia families hit hardest by the recession by extending unemployment benefits, the homebuyers’ tax credit, and tax relief for military families. The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act will provide immediate assistance to millions of families.
“This is another crucial step to provide immediate relief to struggling Georgians who have lost, or are on the verge of losing, their unemployment benefits and get our economy moving in the right direction,” Congressman Scott said. “The families who receive these benefits will be putting money right back into our local economy – buying groceries, filling their cars with gas, and making their mortgage payments on time.”
The legislation will provide families with 14 weeks of additional benefits, and six more weeks to the 27 states with the highest unemployment rates. Georgia is one of the high unemployment states with over 58,000 residents exhausting their current unemployment benefits and a state unemployment rate around 10 percent.
The bill includes an extension of the $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit through April 30, 2010 and provides a $6,500 credit to new purchasers who have lived in their current residence for five years or more. Approximately 55,840 Georgians claimed the tax credit during the past year. The bill also helps military families struggling to make mortgage payments by making those payments tax-exempt.

Congrats on going back to school! WIA paid for me to get certified as PCT,CNA,EKG and Phlebotomy. I’m looking too, to get a job! Are the benefits going to be automatic via the weekly logging in on the computer? Don’t benefits start from Nov. 9, 2009? I’m also going through the throws of getting a home loan modification and would like to know how soon the benefits will be coming. Good luck to everyone in need of this blessing.
I am excited about the extension but where is the action from the state of Georgia. I know the state of Pennslvania have already started payments. Lets remind our representives to have the inititive to ratify the extension with haste! All our state government has to do is sign the bill! It is already approved on a federal level! How come our state governemnt takes months to slove a simple task.
Is there a specific date when the unemployment extension began? I’m very appreciative of the extension, and anxious to get a check. I ran out of benefits in Sept. 2009 I really have been struggling. Please ask the house to speed up the process.I really could use it……..Thanks!

I am super excited about the unemployment extension!!! I can’t speak for everyone else in Georgia, but I need the extra help tremendously. I have been struggling on and off every since September 2007 when my job decided to close one of its plants and layoff anyone who had under 2 years of service. A couple of months ago the entire plant was shut down, leaving everyone jobless. I live in a small community with a few thousand residents and jobs are scarce. I would imagine that 75-80% of our little town is unemployed. Luckily for me I decided to get back into school in the winter of 2007. I will be finished with college in March of 2010, and I will graduate with my Associate’s Degree in Opticianry in May. I hope to never be jobless again!!!!!
