CONGRESSMAN KINGSTON ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT FOR CITY OF HINESVILLE
Grant will help fund Azalea Streetscape Project
September 11, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) announced today that the City of Hinesville is the recipient of a community development block grant (CDBG) from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Funding will be used to fund several projects within the city including the Azalea Streetscape Project.
“I know Mayor Thomas and the City of Hinesville have many worthwhile projects for which this funding will be used,” Congressman Kingston said. “I applaud him for using available resources to continue projects such as the streetscape program which will give much needed enhancements in this neighborhood and benefit the community as a whole. When grant funding is utilized, communities get needed additions while saving the taxpayers money.”
The amount of the grant is $301,370 and will be primarily used for the Azalea Street Redevelopment Project. The project was undertaken to address an urban blight problem in a low-income neighborhood and is already underway with the building of several new structures already in progress. The city hopes that the revitalization of the corridor will help control crime and promote community safety in the area.
“The City of Hinesville is grateful for this CDBG funding,” said Hinesville Mayor James Thomas. “It will help us to pursue many useful projects around the city including our continued work on the Azalea Street Project.”
The CDBG program provides annual grants to states and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons.
